After the worldwide success of “Life after Life”, Raymond Moody continued his research into NDE. He has shared some of the countless NDE stories he has received in his book “New Lights on Life After Life”. Here are a few gems from the book.
The people I interviewed told me they had relived their lives in the presence of a “being of light”. He asked them, in essence, “what have you done with your life?” More precisely, the question seemed to be: “Did you act out of love?”. They therefore perceive in a very precise and sometimes very intense way the moments in which they spoke and acted for love and others.
This life review has shed light on the motivation behind their actions, without any possible concealment. Raymond Moody points out that people felt unveiled. It was as if all the masks and labels behind which they had hidden their lives had been removed.
It’s essential to emphasize that no judgment emanated from the “being of light”. If there was any judgment, it was that of the people themselves on their own lives.
Nothing is forgotten in our lives
As one experimenter put it: I’ve discovered that even our thoughts aren’t lost. All my thoughts were there, in front of me.
We also understand what others have experienced through our interactions. Some people have even experienced being truly “in the shoes” of those with whom they have spoken and acted.
In those moments when the end is near, all masks necessarily fall? We are no longer hidden behind a body, a sexual identity, a life story, a profession, an income class, religious, philosophical, political or other opinions.
The only qualities left are those linked to the soul, i.e. love and wisdom.
Experiencing an NDE changes everything
Those who return from this experience feel an immense and urgent desire to change their way of life. They dedicatent much more time and energy into helping others, and rejoicing in the love they receive and give .
One objection sometimes made to NDE research is that it distracts people from “real” problems: social injustice, global warming and the degradation of biodiversity, armed conflict, and so on. Some believe that interest in NDE is an “opium of the people”. As when religion was/is used to avoid confronting reality and its difficulties.
But there’s no contradiction between being interested in what happens after our life in this world and wanting to improve it. In actual fact, participants come back much more motivated to make their own contribution to a world that is fairer and more respectful of human beings and the environment. Far from distracting us from reality, belief in an afterlife makes us more active in this world.
